FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Oct. 21, 2020 – Athletes from the IHSA will showcase their equitation in the Taylor Harris Insurance Services (THIS) Adult Equitation Championship at the National Horse Show (NHS) in Lexington, Kentucky, Saturday, Oct. 24. This is the second year that qualified IHSA members have been invited to participate in the championship. The THIS Adult Equitation Championship will test riders over a first-round course designed to test accuracy, track and soft aids. At the completion of round one, 15 riders will be invited into the flat phase to ride at the walk, trot and canter both ways of the ring and may require no-stirrup work, gait extensions and lateral work such as haunches or shoulder in. Performance in the flat phase counts 50% towards riders’ overall scores.
After the flat phase riders will take on the final-round track with the judges looking for a smooth, flowing round showcasing pace and form. The final round can include tests such as counter-canter, trot jumps and halting during the course.
If scoring requires additional testing, up to the top six riders may return to ride a course which may include swapping horses or no stirrup work.

ABOUT THE IHSA
The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) welcomes men and women of all riding levels and offers individual and team competition in hunter seat equitation, Western horsemanship and reining at more than 400 member colleges and universities. Membership in IHSA means that college students can participate in horse shows regardless of their experience or financial status.
