The two-time (2011, 2013) Goucher College Coach of the Year joins just 22 equestrian team coaches presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award over the 48-year history of IHSA, including Savannah College of Art and Design 2014 recipient and coach, Eddie 'EdFed' Federwisch; Dartmouth College's Sally Batton (2013); Mary Drueding (2012, St. Lawrence University) and Cindy Ford (2011, Skidmore College).
As Goucher College Equestrian Director from 1987 to 2013, Zumbrun developed one of the top Varsity Riding teams in the Mid-Atlantic region. While at Goucher, her IHSA teams earned a winning reputation, including six IHSA Zone IV Region 1 Champion Team titles over 10 years (2003-2013), five Zone IV Region 1 reserve team titles, and three qualifying trips for the team to the IHSA National Championships, including two Top Ten finishes. In 2008 and 2013, she was recognized by USHJA-ANRC with its Professional Service Award and in 2013 won the USHJA Affiliate Sportsmanship Southeast Regional Award.
April 23, Zumbrun will also be inducted into the Goucher College Athletic Hall of Fame.
“Patte competed in 1975 and 1976 for Averett College, under coach Carol Miller Wiseman, in the Novice, i.e., 'pre-Intermediate' division era,” said Megan Taylor, National Director of the IHSA Alumni Association. “Her favorite part about competing in IHSA was that it was a 'great new experience at the time.' She has stayed in touch with fellow alum and former students.”
IHSA founder and executive director Robert Cacchione will present coach Zumbrun with her IHSA Lifetime Achievement Award on March 28, during the IHSA Hunter Seat Zone Championships at Goucher College, the final qualifying step for teams and individual riders before the 42nd annual IHSA National Championships, April 30-May 4, at the Eastern States Expo in West Springfield, MA.
